BANGKOK, Jan 20 (AFP) - Thailand's prime minister said Thursday his party will pull down campaign posters that showed a candidate shaking hands with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
Orathai Thanajaro, a Thai Rak Thai candidate for a downtown Bangkok constituency, had plastered about town a poster showing her shaking hands with Koizumi.
"The posters have already been withdrawn. To my understanding, she wanted to show her voters that she was working overseas," Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra told reporters.
"But some people thought it was inappropriate, so we withdrew it," he said.
Thaksin spoke after the Nation newspaper ran a front-page story saying that unnamed parties were upset at the appearance of a foreign leader in a political advertisement.
Thailand holds general elections on February 6, with Thaksin's party showing a commanding lead in polls.
