Bangkok (Manage Daily)- Russia seeks strong ties with Thailand, her “oldest partners” in this region.
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in Bangkok on Tuesday from Vientiane for a 2-day official visit to the Kingdom, to discuss issues of mutual interest with his Thai counterpart, Surakiart Sathirathai. Mr. Lavrov participated in the meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers in the capital of Laos over the weekend.
The Russian minister said during an interview upon his arrival at Don Muang airport his country was interested in stronger ties with Thailand, especially in trade and economic cooperation.
Mr. Lavrov said Thailand is Russia’s the oldest partner in Southeast Asia. The two countries established diplomatic ties in 1903 when former King Rama 5 of the old Kingdom of Siam visited Russia.
Thailand is among Russia’s largest trading partners in the region in term of bilateral trade volume that was expected to increase to more than US$ 1 billion this year.
Issues to be highlighted during discussions with the Thai side include opportunities of Russian companies to participate in development projects especially in fuel and energy sector, as well as transport infrastructure in the Kingdom, a Thai foreign ministry official said.
Several Thai investors have expressed their interests in participating in projects in Far East Russia where high demands do exist in expanding scientific and technological cooperation in information technology, space, bio- and nano-technologies, genetics as well as in exploiting alternative energy sources.
“It is important for Russia to maintain, enrich and promote the dialogue with Thailand in developing regional co-operation”, Mr. Lavrov said.
The Russian FM is to sign an agreement on co-operation in education, and to discuss a series of regional agreements that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Thailand’s Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra achieved during their meeting in Santiago, Chile, last month.
These agreements encourage a closer cooperation in economic development and in several other areas.
Leaders attended the 10th ASEAN Summit Meeting in Vientiane this week agreed to hold ASEAN + Russia Summit in Malaysia next year.
